Floating boring/reaming tools also means Deep Hole Floating Tools. it is a type of tool commonly used for semi-finishing and finishing in deep hole machining. They can be used for push boring, reaming, as well as pull boring and reaming. Currently, the tools designed by our company can meet the processing requirements of holes with a diameter of Φ30mm or larger.

TheDeep Hole Floating Tools is installed in the rectangular hole of the tool holder and can freely slide within the rectangular hole. During the cutting process, the tool automatically centers itself through the radial forces on the two opposite cutting edges. At the beginning of boring/reaming, the axis of the hole being machined is often not aligned with the symmetrical center of the boring/reaming tool. The side with the greater radial force will overcome the friction between the floating boring/reaming tool body and the rectangular hole of the tool holder, sliding towards the side with the smaller radial force. As the depth of feed increases, the cutting cone of the floating boring/reaming tool fully enters the hole, and the radial forces on the two cutting edges gradually balance. After the floating boring/reaming edge is fully engaged, the radial forces on the two cutting edges theoretically cancel each other out, achieving alignment between the hole axis and the symmetrical center of the floating boring/reaming tool.

Therefore, this type of tool has the following characteristics:

  1. It can reduce or eliminate machining errors caused by the misalignment of the tool’s rotation axis with the hole’s axis being machined, as well as radial runout of the tool holder.
  2. It can improve the dimensional accuracy and roundness of the hole, with dimensional accuracy reaching IT7-IT8.
  3. It cannot correct the deviation and straightness errors of the hole’s axis.
